Developing complex interventions in public health

This course aims to introduce frameworks for designing public health interventions, including developing skills to work with program theory and logic models. Socio-ecological models of health will serve as the basis of the course. The course will include a basic introduction to evaluation, followed by an additional course on the evaluation of complex interventions.

Learning outcomes:

  • Insight into complex interventions based on the UK Medical Research Council Model
  • Skills for working with program theory and logic models
  • Insight into developing complex interventions using co-production, co-creation and PPI
  • Insight into contextual elements that can influence successful change.

Evaluating complex interventions in public health

The course aims to introduce a framework to guide decisions on evaluating public health interventions that target health behaviour. The course will include quantitative, qualitative and mixed-methods evaluation designs as well as system approaches to evaluation. The MRC model for complex interventions in health will serve as the basis of the course. To some extent, the course builds on the former course in developing complex interventions. However, this course can also stand alone.

Learning outcomes:

  • Insight into evaluating complex interventions based on the MRC Model
  • Overview of different complex intervention evaluation strategies
  • Insight into evaluating complex interventions using quantitative research designs
  • Insight into evaluating complex interventions using qualitative and mixed methods research designs.
